In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, companies face new challenges alongside their past successes. Despite many companies having forged triumphant paths in their respective sectors, the passage of time necessitates reinvention and adaptation to remain competitive. Nowadays, it isn’t enough to just be a leader in the field without a higher purpose driving initiatives forward.
For Iberostar Hotels & Resorts, a commitment to responsible tourism drives the business. Through the adoption of sustainable practices and a mindset geared towards sustainability, the company has recently achieved significant milestones in increasing its sustainable footprint. Notable accomplishments include a decrease in food waste by 11.79% in 2023 when compared to 2022 (in 44 hotels where Winnow systems are present), a 39% reduction in waste sent to landfill in 2023 relative to 2021, and a 12% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions from 2019 to 2023.
As part of its commitment to environmental preservation, Iberostar has implemented a series of responsible measures to ensure that family vacations are not only relaxing but also contribute positively to the world we inhabit. One of the most impactful initiatives involves the reduction of waste across all resort operations. From the elimination of single-use plastics, achieved in 2020 in all over 100 hotels in the network, to the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies, such as Winnow, to reduce food waste, the company is spearheading the transition towards a more responsible future within the hospitality industry.
Another sustainable action undertaken by Iberostar is its dedication to responsible seafood. This entails ensuring that seafood served in its restaurants is sourced sustainably. Collaborative efforts with fishing communities aim to promote sustainable fishing practices and support the development of sustainable fishing industries in regions where the company operates. In Mexico, 100% of the seafood at Iberostar has been responsibly sourced since 2022, a milestone upheld in 2023.
Iberostar also aims to reduce its carbon footprint and transition towards cleaner energy. Through ambitious goals, Iberostar is investing in renewable energy and implementing energy-efficient technologies across all its resorts. The construction of photovoltaic plants and the adoption of cleaner energy sources are pivotal in reducing the carbon emissions of its resorts, contributing to a more prosperous and sustainable future for all.
Among the various initiatives adopted by Iberostar, some established goals stand out such as sending zero waste to landfill by 2025, sourcing 100% of its seafood from responsible sources by 2025 and becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
These sustainability practices not only benefit the environment but also enrich the guest experience. By choosing a vacation destination that prioritizes Responsible Tourism, families can create unforgettable memories while actively participating in efforts to safeguard the planet for future generations.
