The hotel chain, a pioneer in responsible tourism, announces that all the electricity at the Iberostar Praia do Forte Complex in Bahia is now from renewable sourcing.
With its hotels in Spain relying on electricity sourced exclusively from renewable energies and now this hotel complex in the Americas, the Spanish hotel group is leading the energy transition and use of renewable energy in its move towards a circular economy and goal of being carbon neutral by 2030.
Iberostar Hotels & Resorts announces it has achieved its 100% renewable energy milestone in its hotels in Bahia, Brazil, becoming the first Iberostar hotels in the Americas to reach this goal. The complex, which has two hotels, Iberostar Selection Praia do Forte and Iberostar Bahia, and more than a thousand rooms, employs more than 2,000 people and receives approximately 181,000 guests per year, consuming 21.217 MWh of electricity in 2022.
"We are delighted to announce a momentous achievement as we proudly celebrate our hotels in Brazil attaining 100% renewable sourcing. This significant milestone signifies our unwavering dedication towards our 2030 Agenda, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality across Iberostar's global operations by 2030. Through our bold commitments and the tireless efforts of our Sustainability, Operations and Resources teams, we have successfully ensured that the energy powering our Brazil complex is of renewable sourcing," explains Gabriel Martorell, Director of Sustainability Governance at Iberostar.
Building upon its success in Spain, the company is extending its model of responsible tourism to Brazil. Currently, all Iberostar hotels in Spain rely on electricity sourced exclusively from renewable energies, backed by a guarantee of origin. This initiative alone prevents the emission of over 18,000 tons of CO2eq annually. In Brazil, Iberostar is already making significant strides by preventing the release of more than 4,000 tons of CO2eq.
Iberostar Hotels & Resorts is solidifying its position as a leader in energy transition within the tourism sector by upholding its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 through renewable energies, energy efficiency, and electrification. This dedication aligns with the company's goal of combatting the climate crisis and fostering a more responsible tourism model

The Iberostar Praia do Forte Complex has utilized solar energy for select resources since 2010, and now the property is taking another important step to reduce the hotel’s carbon footprint. In addition to investing in renewable electricity, Iberostar has certified the origin of it through the i-REC (Renewable Energy Certificate). The company’s commitment to being free of fossil fuels is well underway, and the plan stipulates that these fuels will be fully replaced by renewable energy.
Recognizing that clean energy is the sole viable option for a sustainable energy future, Iberostar is steadfast in its dedication to promoting the adoption of renewable energies. The company actively supports the advancement of technologies like green hydrogen in Spain, while also striving to inspire the private sector to embrace and integrate renewable energy sources on a larger scale. By pursuing these initiatives, Iberostar aims to facilitate the integration of renewable components into the global energy grid, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
